What is Good Health?

The World Health Organisation defines health as complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, not just the absence of disease. When you are healthy you feel good. You can accomplish those things related to your family, work and leisure. Being healthy sets a good example for your children. Optimal wellness allows you to achieve your goals and find meaning and purpose in your life.

So, what are the factors that support health and what is detrimental to health?

Lifestyle factors that are good for our health:

  • Physical activity that meets recommended guidelines
  • Nutrition or healthy eating adequate for our activity level
  • Adequate rest and sleep to replenish the mind and body
  • Emotional well being
  • Supportive relationships
  • Water, shelter, enough resources
  • Stimulating work, education or leisure
  • Where you live—natural environment
  • Where you live—access to services
  • Participating in health screens and immunisations

Lifestyle factors that are detrimental to our health:

  • Low health education or awareness
  • Obesity
  • Low weight
  • Too much sitting
  • Smoking
  • Fast foods
  • Too much sun—no protection
  • Living under threat (domestic violence)
  • High sugar intake –drinks and complex carbohydrates
  • High stress
  • Unrelenting sleep interruption
  • Poverty or insufficient resources
  • Inaccessible or unused medical or health services
  • Too much alcohol
  • Illicit drugs

A healthy life happens when we positively support our own health and prevent or manage ill health. Balance is important—you don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to positively support your own health

How do I support my own health on a daily basis?

  • Include more lifestyle factors that positively support health
  • Reduce or remove lifestyle factors that are detrimental to your health
  • Prevent health issues by consulting medical and health experts
  • Follow-up with a professional if you feel unwell
